我們經常用 "the + 形容詞" 泛指一群「特殊」的人。
這種 "the + 形容詞" 的用法，其實是我們把後面的名詞省略掉； the rich (people), the young (adults), the gifted (children)，這些省略掉名詞的名詞片語，相當於複數普通名詞，作主詞時，要取複數動詞。
It is the poor, not the rich, who are inclined to charity.
是窮人、而不是富人，會傾向於慈善捐獻。
Fortune favors the prepared.
好運氣偏愛有準備的人。 the prepared 指平時有準備的人。
The elderly are most affected by the disease.
老人最受此疾病感染。
"The elderly" 作主詞時，要取複數動詞。
The profits of Prince Charles’s organic farm go to charities to help the poor and the sick.
查爾斯王子的有機農場的利潤捐給慈善機構，以幫助窮人和病人。
