Bike Ride

Jake was bored. “What can I do?” he asked.

How about a bike ride,” said his mother.

Jake walked outside and jumped on his bike.

Next door, he saw his friend Carly. She sat in the grass on her front lawn. She held a bug box on her lap.

Jake slid off his bike. He peeked inside the box. A furry brown caterpillar crawled up a small twig. “Can I play with it?”

It’s time for my caterpillar to eat lunch,” said Carly.

Jake hopped back on his bike. When he passed Tyler’s house, he slowed down. Tyler lifted his skateboard and looked at the wheels.

Can I try it?” Jake asked.

I need to fix it first,” said Tyler.

Jake hurried on toward Katie’s house. Katie was planting red and yellow flowers in her garden.

Do you need help?” Jake asked.

I’m almost finished,” said Katie.

Jake had an idea. He raced home, pedaling as fast as he could. He found everything he needed. Then he ran back outside.

First, he headed next door. He handed Carly a huge maple leaf. “Lunch for your caterpillar,” he said.

Thanks,” said Carly.

Then Jake walked to Tyler’s house. He passed Tyler a screwdriver. “To fix your skateboard,” he said.

Cool,” said Tyler.

Jake crossed the street to see Katie. “Some water for your flowers,” he said. He held out a watering can.

Thanks,” said Katie.

At home, Jake’s mother asked, “Did you take a bike ride?”

Not just a bike ride,” said Jake. “I fed a caterpillar. I helped fix a skateboard. And, I helped water flowers too.”
