Susan was a woman who hated animals. She never wanted to keep any pets at home. To her, all animals were dirty and boring. Susan could never understand why people would like to have cats or dogs in the house. It was so stupid!

Last month Susan's daughter, Penny, came home from school with a mouse in a box. Susan was very angry. But Penny said that it was her homework. Her teacher asked each student to take care of an animal and learn to get along with it. Susan had to say yes.

It was fun for Penny at the beginning, but then she got lazy and forgot to do her homework. It became Susan's homework. She gave it food and water every day and found that the mouse was in fact not dirty. She even talked to it! It was not boring or stupid! Now Susan is having a good time withhermouse. She named it Nini. And she is going to buy another one to make a pair.

Thanks to globalization, we get to see movies from around the world. If anyone should feel most excited about globalization, it is US movie makers. A study in 2001 shows that, for every 100 people who go to the theater, 85 see US movies. This may be good news for US movie makers, but not for those in other countries.

Chart 1 shows the percentages (%) of US movies in five countries in 1984 and in 2001; Chart 2 shows the percentages (%) of domestic movies in the five countries in 1984 and in 2001. In Chart 1, we can see that US movies have been popular in foreign markets. In Chart 2, we can see that domestic movies in the five countries are not doing well in their domestic market. The falling market for domestic movies may be a serious problem, but there is something more important. When people welcome US movies with open arms, they in fact also say yes to the American way of thinking. Some people in these countries worry that what is lost may not just be their domestic market for domestic movies, but also their own way of thinking that has been passed down from parents to children.

Dear Julia,

It's been two months since I came to England. I have settled down and started to like the life here. I have made several new friends. They are from different countries: Japan, Germany, and Russia. English is the only language we can use for communication. These friends are my classmates, and we also live in the same house. So we are 38 all daystudying, playing basketball and going shopping. It's very interesting to go to the supermarket. People from different countries enjoy different foods. Some of the foods are very 39 to me.

Could you come to England for a vacation this summer? You would love to meet my new friends.

(At the beach)

Ben: Hi, Judy! I can’t believe you came to join us!

Judy: Hello, Ben. I came because I like your idea: when you give, you’re rich. I’m happy that I can do something for the Earth.

Ben: Right. That’s why we had this plan to get our clean beach back. Do you know if Paul’s coming? I remember he had the same idea and said he would try his best to come over.

Judy: But he just called and said he wouldn’t come today because it’s too hot.

Ben: I can’t believe it! He always says, “We can do this and that . . . .”

Judy: Don’t you know him? He only pays lip service to what should be done but seldom does anything.

Ben: I see. Let’s forget about him. We’ll have Tony and Sophie to help us soon.

Judy: That’s great. So where should we start now? Should we pick up those bottles first?

Ben: Sure, let’s go.

The first typhoon of this year is coming fast from the Green Sea. Although it will not arrive until tomorrow, strong winds and heavy rains are here already.

It is quite windy in Greenton. The city's famous bright sun cannot be seen today because the rain is going to last all day. Greenton's temperature today is 21-24°C.

Ferilla is also windy and rainy. Its beautiful beaches are closed because of the typhoon. People who want to have a vacation there will have to change their plans. The city's temperature today is 20-24°C.

The weather in Coco Town will still be good today, just like yesterday, because it is on the north side of White Mountains, and the mountains block most of the wind. The temperature in Coco Town is 25-29°C.
